The Emory University men's tennis team, ranked No. 2 in
Division III, posted an impressive 5-0 win over No. 25-ranked
Washington & Lee Sunday afternoon in a NCAA Championship
third-round match. The first through third rounds were held
in Lexington, Va., and hosted by Washington & Lee. With the
win, the Eagles advance the national quarterfinals where they will
play either Amherst College or Williams on May 25 in Oberlin,
Ohio.
For the second straight day, the Eagles did not drop a set en route
to earning their ninth straight win while raising their record to
16-7. Emory sprinted to a 3-0 lead on the strength of its doubles
play with the No. 1 team of senior Chris Jordan and sophomore Chris
Goodwin setting the tone with an 8-1 decision against Jonathan
Gaffney and Alex Brooke. The No. 2 senior tandem of Oliver
Lopp and David Caplan boosted the team's advantage to 2-0
with a victory while senior Chris Redmond and Noah Simonson picked
up a tight 9-8 verdict over Mac Davis and Will Hall at the No. 3
spot.
Needing two wins in singles to close out the match, Goodwin emerged
with a 6-0, 6-2 win, his 21st of the year, over Davis at
the No. 2 position while sophomore Dillon Pottish's 6-0, 6-0
triumph over Hayden White at No. 1 sealed the outcome of the
contest. The victory increased Pottish's won-lost ledger to
25-6, tying for the seventh-highest seasonal win total in school
history.
