Emory 5, Washington University 2
After a one-year hiatus, the University Athletic Association
men's tennis championship returns to Emory after the Eagles
defeated No. 2 ranked and defending conference titlist Washington
University Sunday afternoon. Emory raised its overall record
to 14-7 after coming away with a 5-2 decision over the Bears who
slipped to 15-4.
After dropping the first point of the match at No. 2 doubles,
Emory, ranked No. 3 nationally, rallied to take to next two points
as senior Chris Jordan and sophomore Chris Goodwin prevailed at the
No. 1 spot while senior Chris Redmond and sophomore Dillon Pottish
broke a 1-1 deadlock with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Cameron Chiang
and Danny Levy.
Pottish continued his stellar play in singles with a 6-0, 6-4,
decision over the Bears' John Watts at the No. 1 slot.
The win was Pottish's 24 of the season, tying for
11th place on the school's seasonal chart.
After Wash U., drew to within 3-2 following a victory at No. 3
singles, the Eagles were able to close the match out when Goodwin
delivered a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Isaac Stein at No. 2,
boosting his won-lost ledger to 19-7, and junior Colin Egan
registered an exciting 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 verdict against Max
Woods at No. 4. Pottish, Goodwin and Egan all finished with
3-0 singles records over the weekend.
Today's meeting against the Bears marked the fifth straight
year that the two programs had met in the conference finals.
Last year, Wash U., ended Emory's 19-year streak of
conference championships.
