In the first game of a doubleheader at the NC Wesleyan/ Coldwell
Banker 2010 Tournament of Champions, the Eagles earned their first
win of the season with a 18-7 thrashing of 17th-ranked
Cortland State University.
The Eagles bats vented their frustration from a 0-2 start on the
pitching staff of 17th-ranked Cortland State University,
scoring 18 runs during the first contest of the day, the most by an
Emory team since April 15th, 2009 when Emory scored 21
against Oglethorpe University. Keying the offensive attack
for Emory was junior first baseman Andrew Cohn,
who went three-for-four with a home run, a double and an Emory
single-game record tying seven RBIs. Cohn is now leading the
team with a .714 batting average (five-for-seven), eight RBIs, and
a .846 on base percentage this season.
The Eagles fell behind in the first inning for the third-straight
contest, as starter Chris Monaco gave up two runs
to the Red Dragon offense. However, Emory would answer right
back with four runs in the bottom of the first and three in the
second to take a 7-2 lead heading into the third.
Monaco would get in trouble again in the third, allowing four more
runs before being pulled from the game with the tying run
aboard. However, senior Brian Cournoyer
entered the game and stranded the runner, going on to pitch four
and a third scoreless innings of two-hit baseball. Cournoyer,
who earned the win to improve to 1-0, has now made two appearances
this season, holding opponents scoreless through six and two thirds
innings with just four hits allowed.
Junior Patrick Riebsame added a two-for-two
performance with two RBIs and four runs scored, while sophomore
Kevin O'Connor was two-for-three with three runs
scored and two RBIs. The Eagles also walked 14 times as a
team during the game, one shy of the school single-game record.
Emory used a total of 21 players during the contest, while Cortland
brought 24 into the game. Four different players made their
career debuts as an Eagle during the game.
In the second game of the day, the Eagles dropped a 6-4 decision to
North Carolina Wesleyan College.
Emory will wrap up play at the NC Wesleyan/ Coldwell Banker 2010
Tournament of Champions on Sunday at 3:00 PM with a rematch against
North Carolina Wesleyan.
