Emory senior Keenan Whitesides scored a career-high 22 points and
grabbed 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Eagles dropped a
road decision to the University of the South. South raised
its record to 2-3 following a 97-87 win over the Eagles who slipped
to 2-4.
Whitesides scored 16 of her 22 points during the second half of
play and ended the evening hitting 11-of-15 from the floor en route
to her fifth double-figure scoring performance of the season.
Sophomore Becca Feldman totaled a personal-best 15 points,
converting five-of-11 from the field including four-of-eight from
three-point range. Rounding out the team's double-figure
scorers were senior Whitney Martin (12 pts.), freshman Danielle
Landry (11 pts.) and sophomore Sally Peterson (10 pts.).
Emory concluded the game shooting 46.6 percent (34-of-73) while the
host Tigers hit on 43.1 percent (31-of-72). The Eagles
enjoyed a 47-42 advantage on the glass but suffered 26 turnovers
while South had 16 miscues.
Trailing by a 41-40 margin at halftime, the Eagles opened the
second half on a 13-6 run, keyed by five points by Feldman and four
by Whitesides to take a 53-47 lead with 16:05 left. Emory
still held a 65-63 margin with 10:37 on the clock following a
bucket by Liz Brandt but a 9-0 sprint by the Tigers put Emory in a
72-65 hole. The Eagles stayed within striking distance and
moved to within one point, 82-81, with 3:16 remaining when
Whitesides culminated a streak of scoring six straight Emory
points. South countered with a triple from Lauren Gulley to
go ahead by four points and another trey by Juliene Joyner with
1:46 left gave South a 90-85 edge. Dani Kabbes led the Tigers
with 18 points.
Emory fell behind by a 10-2 margin early in the
first half, but regrouped to take its first lead of the game at
18-17 with 12:49 left following a basketball by freshman Linsday
Beers. A three-pointer by sophomore Becca Feldman, one of
three that she knocked down in the opening stanza, pushed the
Eagles to a 24-21 edge with 9:40 on the clock. The Tigers
rattled off the game's next five points to take a two-point edge,
but Emory responded with a 14-6 burst, keyed by four points from
Landry and another triple by Feldman, to take its biggest lead of
the half, 38-32, with 2:47 left. However, the Tigers scored
nine of the next 11 points to take a 41-40 into the
intermission. Emory outshot the host Tigers (43.2 percent
vs.34.1 percent) and held a 28-19 edge in rebounding. The
Eagles were hampered by 18 turnovers in the first while Sewanee had
just eight. Feldman totaled nine first half points while
Landry chipped in seven.
Emory returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 5) when it opens
University Athletic Association action with a home game against
Rochester.
