Emory senior Whitney Martin scored a game-high 16 points and paced
all players with 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Maryville
College used a balanced scoring attack in defeating the Eagles
Tuesday evening at the Woodruff PE Center. The Lady Scots
upped their record to 3-1 following a 66-50 decision over Emory who
slipped to 2-3.
Maryville ended the game shooting 46.2 percent from the floor
(24-of-52) while the Eagles finished with a 33.3 percent showing
(18-of-54). The Scots held a 38-32 edge in the rebounding
department and totaled 18 turnovers compared to Emory's 19
miscues.
Maryville led by as many as 11 points late in the first half before
Emory cut the deficit to eight points, 31-23, at halftime. Martin
picked up seven points during the first 20 minutes of play while
the Scots' CJ Dake scored all her 10 points in the opening
stanza.
Martin scored eight of Emory's first 14 points in the second half
and helped it cut the gap to four points, 39-35, with 13:10 left in
the contest. The Eagles still trailed by only five points with
10:25 on the clock following a field goal by Liz Brandt but an
ensuing cold spell from the floor, where it hit just one of six
shots, helped the Scots to a decisive 13-2 burst that put Emory in
a 58-42 hole with 4:55 left.
Martin ended the evening hitting eight-of-12 from the floor while
her 10 boards were a season high and marked her second career
double-double. Brandt came off the bench and gave the Eagles
solid play with nine points in 18 minutes.
Janell Menard led Maryville in scoring with 12 points while Rachel
Draper registered six rebounds.
Emory returns to action on Monday, Nov. 30, when it plays at the
University of the South.
