The Emory University women's swimming & diving team put forth an outstanding performance Friday evening as the Eagles maintained second position at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The 200 Medley Relay team consisting of senior Penny Celtnieks, junior Katie Cohen, sophomore Allison Greeneway and graduate student Ava Kennedy captured the team's first national championship of the meet with their win with a time of 1:39.75. The race was highlighted by an incredible anchor leg from Kennedy who threw down a blistering 21.85 freestyle split to overtake Kenyon for the title.
Celtnieks and Cohen shined individually as well on night three with a pair of national runner-up efforts in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Breaststroke. Celtnieks took part in one of the closest events so far this week at the IU Natatorium with the top three finishers being separated by 0.2 seconds. Celtnieks went for a 54.29 to claim second place, just 0.1 off the leader. In the 100 Breast, Cohen smashed a 15-year-old program record with her finals mark of 1:01.26 as she took silver position.
Additionally, the Eagles posted three more top five finishes on the evening with sophomore Elodie Mitchell placing fourth in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:00.79, graduate student Sammi Thiele going 55 seconds even for a fifth place showing in the 100 Backstroke, and in the 800 Freestyle, Thiele along with juniors Emma Lunn, Natalie Boorjian and Katherine Swan earned fifth with a time of 7:21.09.
At the end of three days in Indy, the Eagles hold down the second spot in the team race with 319.5 points while New York University leads the field with 375 points. Kenyon stands third with 294 points.
The final day of the NCAA Championships will get underway at 10:00 AM Saturday morning.
