Five Emory University student athletes were chosen as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for their performances during the week of February 16-22.
Sophomore Zimo Li tied for the individual title at the Space Coast Classic this weekend, tying a program record with 210 (-6) through three rounds in a crowded field of all Division I schools. She battled adverse weather conditions on Sunday to win a share of the title and lead the Eagles to a fifth place team finish.
Senior Jeff George set a personal-best this past weekend at Emory's Last Chance meet, posting a NCAA B Cut of 1:46.13 in the 200 Backstroke. George's new time ranks 7th in Division III in the event. He also competed in the 100 Breaststroke and touched with a time of 57.36 to represent a new PB.
Junior Yanire Marte had a standout weekend for the No. 3 women's tennis team as the Eagles went 2-0 in Tennessee against NAIA power Tennessee Wesleyan (5-2) and #26 Sewanee (7-0). Marte went 2-0 at No. 3 singles with straight-set performances, defeating TWU 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday before rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 result against her Sewanee counterpart on Sunday. Marte added a 2-0 mark in doubles alongside senior Izzy Antanavicius as the pair posted winning scores of 6-2 vs. TWU and 6-3 vs. Sewanee at the No. 2 spot.
Junior Ellie Zerr had a fantastic opening weekend for the No. 15 ranked softball team, delivering nine hits in 15 at bats and drove in five runs across the 4-0 weekend against Piedmont and Lagrange. She swatted two home runs in Sunday's doubleheader sweep against LaGrange and added a double and two walks.
Freshman Sydney Thune had a remarkable debut performance for the Eagles on Saturday as she spun six innings of one-run ball, only allowing one run on six hits while striking out four and not allowing a walk in the win over Piedmont in the second game of the doubleheader.
