Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: 2/23 - 3/1

Women's Tennis:
Emory's women's tennis team is headed to Nashville, TN for the ITA Indoor National Championships where they will take on #5 Claremont Mudd Scripps in the first round.

The Eagles are coming off a pair of dominant wins against Tennessee Wesleyan and #26 Sewanee last weekend, beating the Bulldogs 5-2 and sweeping the Tigers 7-0 as they remain unbeaten so far this spring.

In the Tennessee Wesleyan matchup, the Eagles handed the Bulldogs a three-match sweep in doubles, dropping only six games across the three matches. In singles, junior Yanire Marte and newcomer Holyn Karp led the Eagles to victory as they recorded straight-set wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 position.

In the Sewanee sweep, the Eagles didn't drop a single set across all six courts in singles, with senior Izzy Antanavicius and sophomore Rachel Hernandez earning 6-0, 6-0 decisions at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions. In doubles, Antanavicius and Marte earned a 6-3 win, Hernandez and Karp delivered a 6-4 decision and seniors Emily Kantrovitz and Iris Berman wrapped things up for the Eagles with a 6-2 result on court one to keep the unbeaten spring streak alive.

Track and Field:
Emory's track and field teams will be in Waltham, MA Saturday and Sunday for the UAA Indoor Championships.

The Eagles are coming off a great performance at the Tryon Last Chance College Meet last Friday, earning eight top three placements in the field events. Emory swept the shotput event, with sophomores Ari Klasky and Jeanette Hydukovich earning top honors for the Eagles. Klasky delivered a 15.71m throw to earn first place while also placing second in the weight throw with a 16.16m mark.

Hydukovich took first with her 12.51m throw, earning her PR, the second-best indoor mark in the UAA this season and the new 65th best mark in Division III. The Emory women shined in the shotput as rookie Caroline Henry and sophomores Jackie Chapman and Janelle Bobb placed third through fifth in the event as well.

Swimming and Diving:
Emory's diving team will stay at home this weekend as they host the NCAA Region 2 Diving Championships on Friday and Saturday.

The Eagles are coming off the Emory Invitational, marking their final home meet of the season. The Eagles earned 25 NCAA B cut times over the three sessions in a final effort to record national qualifying times for the NCAA Championships. Both teams took wins, with the women earning 709 points and the men putting up 769 points on the weekend as they celebrated senior day before the final session on Saturday.

Baseball:
Emory's baseball team will face off against LaGrange and Covenant on the road on Tuesday and Friday before returning home for a doubleheader rematch against Covenant.

The team earned their first wins of the season, going 3-0 on the week as they took on LaGrange at home and Spalding at the Huntingdon Tournament.

In the ten-inning 8-7 win against LaGrange, junior Zach Hanson secured the win for the Eagles with a long single to send rookie Ryan Roggin across home plate to get the game-winning run.

At the Huntingdon Tournament, The Eagles had two dominant wins against Spalding, winning the Friday matchup 12-4 and the Sunday showdown 9-2. In Friday's game, junior Aidan Conley put on a show as he went 4-for-6 with four doubles and two RBI and senior Adrien Armstrong delivered a team-high three runs, including his first career home run. In Sunday's win, senior Adam Geller led the effort from the mound as he allowed only one run, five hits and one walk across six innings while striking out seven Golden Eagles. The team paired Geller's effort with a great team performance at the plate, putting up nine runs on 13 hits.

Women's Basketball:
Emory's women's basketball team will be back at home for their final games of the regular season, facing RV Carnegie Mellon on Wednesday and Rochester on Saturday as they celebrate Senior Day, with celebrations taking place before tip off.

The Eagles had a split road weekend as they got a gritty 76-73 win against Case Western, but fell to RV Carnegie Mellon 57-69 on Sunday.

In the win against the Spartans, junior Alexandra Loucopoulos and freshman Tatum Olson each had monster performances as they put up a combined 51 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Chloe Kreusser got the final shot and led the Emory defense in the final moments of the game, forcing a turnover that secured the win for the Eagles.

Against the Tartans, Olson put up a career-high 27 points and a team-high eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Eagles tried to battle back from a 19-point deficit in the third quarter.

Men's Basketball:
Emory's #5 men's basketball team is returning home for their last games of the regular season, taking on Carnegie Mellon on Wednesday and Rochester on Saturday for Senior Day, with festivities taking place before game time.

The Eagles had a perfect road weekend as they got the 101-93 win against Case Western and beat Carnegie Mellon 87-77, with senior Ben Pearce becoming the all-time scoring leader following a career-high 37-point performance against the Tartans.

In the matchup against the Spartans, four Eagles notched 15 or more points as senior Jair Knight led the team with 31 points on the night. Pearce also went 15-for-16 from the free throw line, tying a single-game team record. Junior AJ Harris earned a new career-best as he went 5-for-11 from three to put up 20 points. Sophomore Harris Jackson also set a new career high, notching 17 points in 27 minutes.

Against the Tartans, Pearce led the team with a record-shattering 37 points to reach the top of the all-time scoring list. Junior Ethan Fauss also had a career-defining night as he put up 29 points with five three-pointers and a team-high 14 rebounds to lead Emory to its 20th win of the season.

Softball:
The Emory softball team will return home to take on Berry College in a home doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game beginning at 1:00 PM.

The Eagles are coming off a successful opening weekend, securing wins in a pair of doubleheaders against Piedmont at home and LaGrange on the road to start the season 4-0.

In the Piedmont home doubleheader, the Eagles got the 11-10 win in extra innings in game one and secured the sweep with a 7-1 win in game two. Shea Johnson secured the game-winning run for the Eagles with the bases loaded at the top of the eighth in game one. Game two saw another dominating performance as Lillian Ware got the first home run of the season for the Eagles and rookie Sydney Thune had a stellar debut on the mound, allowing only one run on six hits alongside four strikeouts and no walks.
