Members of the Emory University men's tennis team concluded the ITA South Regional on Tuesday with the all-Emory doubles championship match taking place on the team's home courts at the WoodPEC.
After advancing to the title match over the weekend in Memphis, the pairings of Ajay Kartik/Sammy Nieder and Juno Pethe/Mitchell Deames squared off in Atlanta for ITA hardware.
Kartik/Nieder claimed the opening set by a 6-4 count before Pethe/Deames forced a third set tiebreaker by taking the second set with a 6-4 margin. In the tiebreak, Kartik/Nieder opened with four of the first five points before Deames/Pethe cut the deficit to 5-3. However, Kartik/Nieder closed the tiebreak and the match with five of the next seven points to clinch the win 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
The win is Kartik's second of the fall after the third-year claimed the singles regional title on Sunday in Memphis while this is Nieder's first regional crown he's been a part of.
The Eagles will now send their regional finalists to Rome next weekend to compete in the ITA Cup from October 15-18.
