Following the team's run through the ITA South Regional last weekend, the Emory University women's tennis team was back on the courts on Friday taking part in the first of two days of the Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon, Georga.
The day began with the Eagles posting a 10-8 mark in singles competition spread out through five different flights.
In the A2 Flight, junior Rachel Hernandez claimed a pair of victories against Florida Southern (7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (2)) and Georgia Southern (6-2, 7-6 (5)) to reach the draw's semifinals. Sophomore Jessy Chen reached the semifinals in the B2 Flight following a 6-0, 6-1 against Abraham Baldwin and win via retirement against Georgia State's Bernardi with the match standing 6-7 (7), 6-2, 2-0 in favor of Chen. In the C flight, sophomore Daniela Livson also reached the draw's semis as she came back to defeat Western Carolina's Steyn 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 before toppling North Georgia's Celik 6-0, 6-0.
The sophomore duo of Visnja Gusavac and Holyn Karp added first round victories while playing in the tournament's top singles flight with Gusavac besting Kennesaw State's Nadaska 6-1, 6-3 and Karp downing North Georgia's Stokusova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 before both Eagles bowed out in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, the Eagles went 1-3 on the day in matches against Georgia Southern University counterparts with the pairing of Chen and Livson earning the lone win with their 6-0 whitewashing of Rosadoro/Freund.
The Mercer Gridiron Classic will conclude with singles and doubles matches on Saturday starting at 9:00 AM.
