#2 Women's Tennis Headed Back to National Quarterfinals; Downs W&L, 4-0, in Regional Final

The No. 2 ranked Emory University women's tennis team advanced to the national quarterfinals for the 17th consecutive season after dispatching the Washington & Lee University Generals, 4-0, on their home courts in Lexington, Virginia in Sunday's regional final.

The Eagles will be headed to Claremont, California for the final rounds of the NCAA Championships and will face Bowdoin College in the Elite Eight on Tuesday, May 20th.

After taking down North Carolina Wesleyan with ease on Saturday, the Eagles were tested a bit by the host Generals before coming away with the 4-0 victory.

In doubles, Emory came through with the point as the second and third doubles teams collected wins within 45 minutes. On court two, juniors Izzy Antanavicius and Iris Berman were the first to finish with their 6-4 decision. Minutes later, senior Eliza McPherron and sophomore Yanire Marte secured the clinching point with a 6-3 result on court three.

As the match moved to singles, the Generals fought hard with several close sets, but the Eagles' firepower and deep lineup were too much for W&L to handle.

Antanavicius earned her second singles win of the tournament as she was the first to reach a conclusion with a decisive 6-0, 6-4 win on court two.

Following the 2-0 lead, it was doubles partners Dakota Fordham and Emily Kantrovitz that clinched the match for the Eagles. After not being able to close out the win in doubles after leading 6-5 when play was abandoned, both players were able to earn victories on the singles court. Fordham added another win to her weekend's ledger with her 6-1, 6-4 line on court six prior to Kantrovitz locking up the win with a 6-4, 7-5 hard-fought win at the No. 1 position.

When play concluded, Berman (6-2, 4-1) and Marte (6-4, 1-2) held leads in their matches while McPherron was looking for a comeback on court five, trailing 6-7, 3-2.

More information regarding the final rounds of the NCAA Championships, including start times, will be made available on emoryathletics.com when they are received.
