Box Score 2 The Emory University softball program concluded the Eagles Elite Invitational on Saturday afternoon going 1-1 taking a win against the No. 25 ranked St. John Fisher Cardinals.
The Eagles went 2-2 in the tournament hosted at Cooper Field in Atlanta, Georgia and currently hold an 8-2 record to open the season. Saturday afternoon saw some of the toughest battles yet with the Eagles scoring just two runs on the day and allowing two runs.
Three Eagles saw time in the circle with juniors
Mackenzie Duford and
Isabel Cohen teaming up in the win against the Cardinals. Sophomore
Lexi Bach allowed just two runs in the game against the No. 17 ranked Pfeiffer Falcons tossing a full 7.0 innings of work.
Game 1: Pfeiffer 2, Emory 1
After a quick 1-2-3 inning from Bach in the top of the first, the Eagles were able to get two runners on base from a walk and a hit by pitch, but the Falcons were able to get out of the jam unharmed.
Pfeiffer struck in the top of the third inning opening with a single and a sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position. The Falcons followed with a double to left center to score their first run of the day. Another single put a runner on third who was able to score on a fielding error from Emory's defense giving Pfeiffer a 2-0 lead.
Emory answered in the bottom of the third with junior
Ashley Chu leading off the inning with an infield single and a stolen base. Sophomore
Grace Cooper followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Chu to third allowing sophomore
Ellie Zerr to bring her in with a double to right field.
In the top of the fourth, the Falcons were able to notch three back-to-back singles to load the bases but Bach was able to get out of the jam without allowing another run.
The next three innings were a battle between pitchers with just six more base runners allowed on both sides. The Eagles got a base runner in the bottom of the seventh but the Falcons finished with three outs to clinch their third win of the tournament.
Game 2: Emory 1, St. John Fisher 0
The Cardinals looked to strike early in the top of the first inning with back to back singles but Duford finished the inning with two quick outs to get out of the jam. The next few innings saw three quick outs from both pitchers with each team getting a single in the third inning.
Starting in her first game of the tournament, freshman
Addison Kwong opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Abby Wylie came into the game as a pinch runner and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Chu then drove a single to center field scoring the Eagles' first run.
Both teams were able to get baserunners through the next few innings before Cohen came into the game for the final two outs to clinch another win for Emory.
The Eagles will be heading to Honolulu, Hawaii for spring break to play in the Division III Ulili Softball Invitational. The first games will be played on Wednesday, March 12 against Sewanee and SUNY Oneonta.
