Three members of the Emory University men's basketball team were honored by the University Athletic Association Wednesday afternoon as the conference announced its All-Association teams for 2024-25.
Junior guard combo Ben Pearce and Jair Knight became the first Eagles tandem in team history to be All-UAA First Team selections in back-to-back seasons while senior Logan Shanahan was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the third Emory player ever to earn the acclaim. Shanahan was also honored with a spot on the All-UAA Second Team.
The trio were instrumental in leading the Eagles to a 20-5 overall record this year with 2024-25 marking the 10th time in program history an Emory team eclipsed the 20-win mark in a season. The Eagles will be situated as the No. 5 overall seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament and will be hosting the opening rounds in Atlanta this weekend on March 7-8.
Pearce is just the seventh player in program history to earn three All-UAA First Team selections and the first since Matthew Schner did so in 2019, 2020 and 2022. As a junior, Pearce tops the conference in assists with career-best marks of 131 total dimes and an average of 5.5 per game while ranking sixth in the UAA in scoring at 16.9 points per game. He ended the regular season third in the UAA with 43 steals and fourth among conference leaders with 59 successful three-pointers. On 10 different occasions this season, Pearce reached the 20-point mark in a game including a season-high of 28 in a road win over No. 2 NYU on January 17. He became the 19th member of the Eagles' 1,000 points club on December 8th and enters the postseason with 1,300 career points – the 8th-best mark in team history. Furthermore, he ranks sixth all-time with 175 three-points and seventh with 381 assists.
Knight joins Pearce on the All-UAA First Team for the second straight season after earning Honorable Mention status as a freshman. Knight ramped up his game as a junior, setting personal bests in scoring (19.2 PPG) and rebounding (6.7 RPG) to rank among the conference leaders. Additionally, he leads all UAA performers with 2.13 steals per game and 51 total thefts and checks in fifth in the UAA with 27 blocks. Knight has scored 20 or more points 12 times this season including a career-high of 31 in a win at No. 9 Calvin back on November 22. He'll enter the weekend needing just 20 points to become the fifth player in Emory history to reach 500 points in a single season. In his career, Knight stands 12th all-time with 1,209 career points as he joined Pearce in the 1,000-points club with a 20-point outing at Brandeis on January 19th.
Shanahan joins Josh Schattie (2014-15) and Lawrence Rowley (2019-20) as the only Eagles to be honored as the Defensive Player of the Year in the UAA with 2024-25 representing his first-ever All-UAA recognition. The fourth-year forward transformed into one of the premier rim-protectors in the country this season with his UAA-leading 69 blocks as he ranks 8th in Division III with 2.88 blocks per game – the second-highest mark by an Eagle in a single season. With Shanahan's presence down low, the Eagles currently lead all of Division III with 6.5 blocks per game while also checking in at 15th nationally (1st in UAA) with a 38.7% opponents field goal percentage. He recorded three or more blocks 15 different times this season and had a career-best seven swats against Rochester on January 11th – the second-highest total by an Eagle in a game in team history. Additionally, Shanahan is posting career highs in scoring (13.6 PPG) and assists (38) and leads the team with four double doubles. He'll look to become the 21st member of Emory's comma club this weekend, needing just 19 points to reach 1,000 in his career.
The Eagles will look to begin their NCAA postseason run this Friday, March 7th as Emory hosts CCS champion, Huntingdon College (22-6), in the first round at 6:50 PM at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.
