The Emory men's tennis team traveled to Rome, Georgia to compete in a pair of matches against in-state foes Berry and Covenant on Saturday. The Eagles extended their dual match winning streak to four, starting with a 7-0 sweep over Covenant before earning a 6-1 win over Berry. Both matches were played at the Rome Tennis Center.
Match 1: Emory 7, Covenant 0
The Eagles got things started with a match against the Covenant Scots, with the Eagles winning in a 7-0 sweep.
Starting with doubles, the Eagles swept all three matches with some new pairings taking the court. It was a pair of rookies on court one, with freshmen
Ruilin Feng and
Ajay Kartik playing to a 6-1 win. Graduate student
Charley Force and junior
John Lasanajak teamed up on court two, also playing to a 6-1 win. Junior
Alex Marino and freshman
Joshua Lai completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win on court three.
Emory kept it rolling right along entering singles play, winning five of the six matches. Force earned his first win in the No. 1 position this year, winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Lai earned his second win in dual match play, coming on court three with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Kartik and Lipari also won in straight sets, with Kartik's win coming on court five (6-1, 6-0) and Lipari on court six (6-3, 6-3). Rounding out the singles matches was Lasanajak, who rallied back to win after dropping his first set. His final line came to (2-6, 6-2, 10-5).
Match 2: Emory 6, Berry 1
After wrapping up a win against the Scots, the Eagles took down Berry in convincing fashion by a score of 6-1.
Starting with doubles, Kartik and Lasanajak partnered up on court one this time around, winning their match, 6-2. Lipari and freshman
Alec Anghel temed up on court three and earned a 6-1 win to secure the match's doubles point. Lai and Marino were paired on court two but fell by a score of 6-4.
The Eagles went into the singles portion of the match with the Vikings with a 1-0 lead, needing three wins to seal off a victory. The Eagles went on to win five of the six.
Anghel earned a win on court one, rallying for a three-set victory. After dropping the first set, 3-6, he went on to win the following two, 6-3 and 6-4. Lasanajak took a win on court two, winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). Lai, Kartik, and Marino followed suit and won their matches in straight sets as well. Lai took the win on court three (6-3, 6-0), Kartik on court four (6-1, 6-2), and Marino on court six (6-3, 6-2).
Lipari narrowly dropped his match in three sets on court five (6-4, 4-6, 8-10) to round out the day for Emory.
The Eagles will return to the Woodruff P.E. Center tomorrow for their first outdoor match at home, taking on UAA-foe #20 Carnegie Mellon. The match against the Tartans is slated for a 12:00 PM start.
