Box Score No. 6 Emory men's soccer took down Rochester 2-1 on the road Saturday night in a strong defensive matchup to end the regular season. This puts the Eagles at 12-1-3 overall and 2-1-3 in conference play heading into the postseason. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fell to 9-5-4 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play to end the regular season.
Emory outshot Rochester 14-11 on the match as they are second in the nation and first in the conference in shots. Emory also put up three saves to their two on the day.
Ignacio Cubeddu got things started for the Eagles with a shot off the corner kick, but the Yellowjackets came back and put up three shots within three minutes. The first half went scoreless but the Eagles put up seven shots on the half to Rochester's four.
In a strong defensive battle,
Geoffrey Halpern had one save on the half to Rochester's two on the half as the first half came to an end.
The action ramped up in the second half, with
Jack Burgess,
Logan Steren and
Josh Ali all putting shots up in the first four minutes. With both teams putting up strong defensive performances,
Owen Clark put the Eagles on the board off the corner kick in the 60
th minute, thanks to assists from
Christopher Marchant and
Adeyemi Oni.
To keep the action going, the Yellowjackets found the back of the goal about ten minutes later off the Emory goal kick to tie the game 1-1 in the 70
th minute.
The Eagles went back into defensive mode as Rochester put up multiple shots in effort to keep their momentum, but a save from Halpern in the 78
th minute kept the Eagles alive.
The momentum started to shift Emory's way as Burgess got a shot off the crossbar, but it was Marchant who scored the second goal for the Eagles off the crossbar on a header after the free kick in the 84
th minute.
