In a battle of the top teams in the University Athletic Association, the Emory University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with No. 3 ranked Case Western Reserve University Saturday afternoon at the WoodPEC in Atlanta.
With the tie, the Spartans maintain their one-point lead over the Eagles as CWRU will head into the final regular season weekend with 12 points to their ledger while Emory stands in second at 11 points. Chicago, Carnegie Mellon and WashU are all tied for third place with 10 points.
Following 42 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Spartans got on the board shortly before the halftime break when Cameron Thayer knocked in a rebound from inside the six for the game's first score. Aydin Sumer had the initial shot on frame which was saved by Geoffrey Halpern, however the ball found Thayer at the left post where he finished for the goal.
Despite mustering just one shot in the first half, the Eagles upped the intensity in the second half as they flipped the possession battle.
With the increase in scoring opportunities, Emory finally found the equalizer in the 75th minute when sophomore Ewen Robertson scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Junior Jake Breitegan sent a long-range volley into the box where Robertson used his height advantage to redirect the offer into the top portion of the net.
Sophomore Jeremiah Cateau recorded the game's final two attempts over the remaining 15 minutes of play but neither were on frame.
The Eagles will close out the regular season next Saturday with a Senior Day matchup against Rochester. Action from the WoodPEC is set for 11:00 AM.
