The No. 17 ranked Emory University men's soccer team picked up a well-earned point on the road Sunday afternoon, drawing 2-2 against the WashU Bears in St. Louis. Missouri.
Sophomore Ewen Robertson put forth a heroic effort as the Eagles bounced back from Friday's result. With Sunday's tie, Emory stands in second place in the University Athletic Association title race with points at 3-1-1 and trails Case Western Reserve by one point ahead of next weekend's meeting. For WashU, they claim their first tie in conference play to move to 2-2-1 and in a three-way tie for fourth place with two games remaining.
Robertson bookended Sunday's match with the first and last goals of the afternoon as the Eagles salvaged the road draw.
In the 12th minute, Robertson put Emory on the board first as he headed in his seventh goal of the season. Senior Logan Steren had the initial header following a Jeremiah Cateau corner kick before Robertson found the back of the net.
The Bears countered with a pair of goals with Wole Adeoye scoring the game-tying goal in the 22nd minute before notching the go-ahead strike in the 62nd minute following a great thru-ball from Ethan Wirtschafter pass the Emory defense.
Trailing 2-1 and down a man due to a red card moments prior, Robertson came through with the late-game equalizer as he scored from close range in the 84th minute with Walker Stebbings collecting the assist.
Both teams had scoring chances over the final minutes including a last-second shot from Sebastian Valdes but a save from senior Geoffrey Halpern with five seconds preserved the 2-2 draw.
Emory will host CWRU in a matchup between the top two UAA programs on Halloween starting at 11:00 AM in Atlanta.
