2024 Emory Baseball Season Recap

With another successful season in the books, the Emory University baseball program saw its 12th consecutive winning season during the 2024 campaign. After 25 historical seasons with the Eagles, head coach Mike Twardowski announced he was stepping down from his position with assistant coach Bobby Perez earning the promotion to head coach.

The Eagles finished the season with a 23-15-1 record seeing just the third tie in program history, the first since 2008, and finished conference play with a 10-6-1 record. Statistically, Emory finished second in the UAA with a 5.34 ERA and finished third with a .319 batting average. The Eagles paced the conference with 15 triples and allowed the least amount of earned runs in the conference.

One of the best offensive Eagles this season, junior Matthew Sicoli was the only member of the roster to start in each of the team's 39 games while finishing second on the team with a .384 batting clip. To go along with his average, Sicoli led all Eagles with 63 hits including a team-leading seven home runs and drove in 48 runs, the six-best total in the UAA. He posted a program record-tying six hits in a 6-for-6 effort against Case Western Reserve on March 30 and had a career-best eight RBI in a win at Covenant on March 4, the third-highest single-game total in team history. Furthermore, he was one of four Eagles with double-digit steals, going 13-for-16 on the basepaths.

Another junior leader for Emory, Jack Halloran made 38 starts while posting an average of .395, the fourth best in the UAA, with a .620 slugging percentage. He was second on the team with six home runs, moving into second place on the Emory all-time list, and contributed nine doubles and one triple. Halloran was a perfect 6-for-6 on the basepaths while holding a .544 on-base percentage. He was one of two Eagles to drive in over 40 runs, recording 44 RBI, to go along with 51 hits. During the season, Halloran had a string of 10 consecutive games with at least one RBI and had a season-best four RBI twice against Berry and Rose-Hulman.

In his second season in the Blue & Gold, junior Blake Dincman registered team-highs in both batting average (.412) and slugging percentage (.640) and finished second on the team and fourth in the UAA with a .489 on-base percentage. He had 47 hits including 14 doubles and four home runs and was fourth on the team with 31 RBI in 35 games played. Dincman was third on the team with 14 multi-hit games, three shy of Sicoli and Halloran's team-leading 17 and had a pair of four-hit efforts in wins over Huntingdon and WashU.

On the mound for the Eagles, freshman JT Rattigan shined his debut season, posting a 7-1 record in 10 appearances and was 3-1 in his four starts in conference play. In 40.1 innings, he turned in a 3.79 ERA and struck out 27 batters. His seven wins topped all UAA hurlers and is four behind the nation's lead. He won his final three UAA starts against NYU, WashU and Brandeis and twirled a complete game shutout against the Judges, striking out four and allowing just five singles.

The team got off to a rocky start going 1-4 in the first five games of the season. Back to back wins against MUW and Huntingdon helped Emory gain momentum taking 2-of-3 against Rose-Hulman.

Emory opened the month of March with a three-game sweep of Covenant before going 2-for-2 in their next four games against Birmingham-Southern and Piedmont to hold a 10-9 record on the season. The Eagles then finished non-conference play with a 3-1 record taking wins over Wooster and Birmingham-Southern. After dropping the series to eventual UAA Champion Case Western Reserve, the Eagles split their series with NYU scoring 29 runs in the series. Staying on the road, Emory took three games against WashU with game three ending in a tie due to darkness.

Returning back to the helm, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels came down the road for a mid-week matchup before the Eagles closed out the season with series win against the Brandeis Judges.

The Eagles exceled on the field this season earning a number of athletic and academic honors. Sicoli earned All-Region First Team acclaim from the American Baseball Coaches Association as well as Second Team recognition from d3baseball.com.
