Softball Finishes Series with 6-1 Win over Brandeis

Box Score

The Emory University softball team defeated the Brandeis University Judges, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The Eagles improve to 19-13 with the win and hold a 5-7 record in conference play after going 3-1 against the Judges. Sophomore Ella Hoyle continued her RBI streak into Sunday's matchup posting three RBI after going 4-for-4 on the day. Freshman Georgia Pineda picked up her fifth win of the season throwing a complete game and allowing just one run and posting two strikeouts.

The first inning saw six quick outs before each team was able to get a runner on base in the second inning on singles but neither team was able to capitalize on the runner. The Eagles jumped to an early lead in the top of the third with freshman Lillian Ware starting the inning with a one-out infield single.

After a walk to freshman Grace Cooper, senior Page Nellis was hit by a pitch marking her 17th of the season to break the single-season record of 16 which was set by Nellis last season. With the bases loaded, freshman Ellie Zerr singled up the middle to score two followed by an RBI single from Hoyle scoring the third run of the inning for the Eagles.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Judges were able to load the bases after a leadoff double before Pineda was able to get out of the jam unscathed.

A leadoff walk followed by a single started the top of the fourth for the Eagles putting runners on the corners before sophomore Ashley Chu reached first on an error from the Brandeis defense allowing Emory's fourth run of the game to touch home plate.

Nellis and Zerr started the top of the fifth with a single and a double allowing Hoyle to follow with a two-RBI single to left-center field pushing the Eagles to a 6-0 lead over the Judges after five innings.

The Judges opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff home run to center field but Pineda followed with a scoreless frame in the seventh to secure the 6-1 win for the Eagles.

Next weekend, Emory will be back in Atlanta for a four-game series against the NYU Violets with game one starting on Friday, April 19 at 3:00 PM.
