The Emory university swimming and diving team began competition at the Denison Invitational on Thursday. After one day of competition, the Eagles stand in first out of five teams with 534 points. Emory finds itself ahead of Denison, NCAA Division II opponent University of Indianapolis, Divisino I foe Eastern Michigan, and a fellow UAA member WashU. The Eagles compiled seven NCAA B Cuts on the event's opening day. The event was hosted at Denison University's Trumbull Aquatic Center in Granville, Ohio.
While the Eagles did not touch first in any events, they were able to put together a number of flashy performances, especially from their freshmen. Freshmen
Allison Greeneway and
Caitlin Crysel came in second and third, respectively, in the 200 IM. Greenway clocked in at 2:00.79, just six-tenths of a second off the winner and recording an NCAA B Cut. The time also broke her own program record, set just a couple of weeks back at the Emory Fall Invitational. Crysel turned in a time of 2:03.80, also worthy of a B Cut.
The pair of freshmen teamed up with graduate student
Megan Jungers and sophomore
Katie Cohen in the 400 Medley Relay for a second-place finish with a time of 3:43.30, also good for a B Cut. Another foursome comprised of junior
Penny Celtnieks, sophomore
Maren McDonald, and freshmen
Maddy Lu and
Louisa Wendt turned in a B Cut in the 400 Medley, coming in fourth and clocking in at 3:45.31.
The Eagles also put together a strong time in the 200 Free Relay, with freshman
Stephanie Lee, sophomore
Natalie Boorjian, junior
Jane Sanderson, and Celtnieks turning in a third-place finish. They clocked in at 1:34.48, good for an NCAA B Cut.
Joining Greeneway and Crysel with strong individual performances were junior
Meredith Liu and senior
Ava Kennedy. Both recorded B Cuts, with Liu clocking in at 4:55.85 in fourth place in the 500 Free and Kennedy coming in sixth with a time of 23.55 in the 50 Free.
The Eagles will be back in the pool tomorrow starting at 10:00 AM for prelims before starting the finals at 6:00 PM.
