Emory Softball Splits Doubleheader At Wash U

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Sophomore pitcher Madison Schaefer tossed a complete-game eight hitter in helping the Emory softball team to a second-game win and a split of a Saturday doubleheader at Washington University. The Eagles posted a 3-2 triumph in the night cap, leaving its overall record at 19-5, 5-1 in the University Athletic Association. The Bears held off Emory for a 6-5 victory in the first contest.

Seven players hit safely for Emory in the second game including Cassie Baca and Greta Wilker who each recorded one RBI. The Eagles snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the top of the fourth when sophomore Meghan Murphy led off with a single and then proceeded to steal second. A single by freshman Mattie Ryan pushed Murphy to third base, where she eventually scored as a result of a passed ball. The Eagles tacked on what proved to be an important score in their half of the seventh when a one-out single by Baca plated Jenna Wilson. Meanwhile, in the circle, Schaefer hurled her fourth complete game in upping her season record improve to 8-1, striking out a season-high seven batters

In the first meeting, Wash U broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fourth frame that was highlighted by a two-run double by Mikaela Arredondo. Emory scrapped back, cutting its deficit in half in the sixth when it scored twice thanks to a two-run single by pinch hitter Greta Wilker. In a strange seventh frame, the Eagles stayed alive when Feller delivered a single with the bases loaded that scored a run. However, on the play, the Eagles had a runner thrown out at home which would have knotted the score. With runners on second and third, the next Emory batter was ruled to have struck out, igniting a 15-minute conversation to determine if the umpires had lost track of the count. The Eagles' attempt to add another run was foiled as their next batter flew out. Jenna Wilson and Feller each collected three hits to pace the offensive attack

Emory and Wash U are scheduled to close out the series with a twinbill on Sunday starting at 1:00 pm (EDT).
