Emory Softball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Carnegie Mellon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Emory softball team opened University Athletic Association play on a successful note on Friday, recording a home doubleheader sweep of Carnegie Mellon. The Eagles won their eighth and ninth games and raised their overall record to 16-4 after posting a 6-2 victory in the opener, followed by a five-inning, 17-1 decision in the finale.

Emory pounded out 13 hits, the seventh time this year it finished with double figures, and had six players total two or more RBIs. Senior Cassie Baca went 2-for-2 at the plate, scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs while junior Sami Feller also hit safely twice with a pair of RBIs. Emory scored runs in all four innings it batted, highlighted by a seven-run third frame that saw Feller single in Jessy McLean, who opened the inning with a triple and Meghan Murphy, who walked and then stole second.  Sarah Katz contributed to the uprising with a two-run double, while Murphy later came through with a two-run single.  The Eagles added five more runs for good measure in the fourth with Baca and senior Max Faass registering two-run singles.  Senior pitcher Toko Miller upped her season record to 5-1, tossing all five innings and allowing just three hits while striking out three.

Senior Jenna Wilson collected three hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs, while freshman Mattie Ryan also hit safely twice with two ribbies, to spark the Eagles' offense in the first game.  A four-run second inning propelled Emory early Ryan smacking a tow-bagger that plated Wilker and Murphy.  With two out, Wilson came through with a triple that allowed Feller and Ryan to score.  The Eagles finished out their scoring in the fourth with Wilson opening the inning with a single and then swiping second and third base before eventually scoring on a wild pitch.  Murphy accounted for the final run with a single to left field that plated Morgan Weisenberg. Sophomore Madison Schaefer drew the start in the circle and saw her record move to 7-1 after going the distance, surrendering six hits.

Emory and CMU close out the four-game series on Saturday with a twinbill that starts at 1:00 pm.
