Emory Softball Splits Doubleheader vs. DePauw

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Senior shortstop Cassie Baca collected three hits, scored three times and drove in three runs in leading the Emory softball team to a second-game win and a split of a Saturday  home doubleheader against DePauw University.  The Eagles notched their first win of the year in three starts following a 9-5 decision over the Tigers who stand 1-1 after winning the first game of the day, 7-5.

Baca scored the team's initial run in the nightcap in the bottom of the first after leading off with a double and then stealing third base.  Sophomore second baseman Sarah Katz plated Baca with a sacrifice fly.  Trailing by a 2-1 count heading into their half of the second, the Eagles scored four times with Baca delivering the key blow of the frame, a two-run double that scored senior outfielder Jenna Wilson and sophomore Meghan Murphy.  Murphy enjoyed a productive contest, picking up a pair of safeties, giving her four over the two games, and scoring twice.  Emory pushed its lead to 8-2 with a three-run spot in the fourth, ignited by a leadoff two-bagger by Murphy who scored via a pinch-hit single by freshman Megan Weisenberg, and fueled by a triple by Baca that allowed pinch runner Jenna Wilson to scamper home.  Senior pitcher Toko Miller picked up the win, going the first six frames and giving up four runs and striking out two.

In the opener, the Tigers did all their scoring in the first inning, collecting five hits and sending 11 batters to the plate.  The Eagles got two back in their half of the frame when a single by sophomore Natalie Arreguin drove in Bacca and Katz.  Emory closed its deficit to two runs after tacking up a pair of scores up in the sixth with a double by freshman Baylee Walls scoring Arreguin Walls later scoring as a result of a DePauw error.  Senior Madeline Maday took the setback in the circle, hurling all seven frames, giving up four earned runs and eight hits while striking out four.

Emory and DePauw close out the three-game series on Sunday morning at 10:00 am.
