Box Score The Emory softball team opened its 2019 campaign on a windy Sunday afternoon on its home field, dropping the first game of a twin bill to No. 13 Berry College. The No. 13 Vikings raised their record to 3-0 following a 9-7 come-from-behind decision. The second contest was halted in the top of the fourth inning with Emory holding a 3-0 advantage. The two teams will resume the contest from the point at which it was stopped some time at a later date.
Emory pounded out 13 hits in the opener, two each by senior outfielder Jenna Wilson, junior outfielder Sami Feller, sophomore Natalie Arreguin and sophomore third baseman Megan Murphy. The Eagles tacked up one run in the first two frames with Feller knocking in Wilson with the team's initial score of 2019, while senior outfielder Sam Vincent plated Arreguin the following frame. Emory exploded for a five-run third inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and collecting five hits. Arreguin came through with the big blow in the uprising, smacking a two-run double that scored freshman Krista Colussi and Feller. Berry got on the board in its half of the fifth, crossing the plate four times to narrow its deficit to 7-4. The Vikings continued their comeback the following inning with a two-run homer by Bayleigh Masterson narrowing their deficit to one run. In the top of the seventh, Berry scored three times, the first two via wild pitches and the insurance tally on a two-out single. Sophomore Madison Schaefer took the loss in the circle while Meredith Holland posted the win in relief for BC.
In the halted second game, Emory scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the second, ignited by a two-bagger by Feller that scored freshman Mattie Ryan who opened the inning with a single. Ground outs by Colussi and Meghan Murphy drove in the other two runs. Senior Madeline Maday drew the start in the circle and had limited BC to one hit. Stats for the second will become official once it is resumed and reaches five innings.
Emory returns to action next Saturday (Mar. 2) when it hosts DePauw in a doubleheader starting at noon.
