Emory Softball Takes Two From Bridgewater College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Emory softball team kept up its winning ways on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against Bridgewater College.  The Eagles registered a 3-2 victory in the opener before rolling to a five-inning, 12-0 triumph in the finale.  Emory has won its last 20 games and stands 29-1 on the year.  The two setbacks left Bridgewater's record at 4-14.

Emory pounded out 13 hits in the second game against BC.  Senior center fielder Alyssa Pollard collected a pair of safeties in three plate appearances while scoring twice and knocking in three runs.  Junior Taylor Forte went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Freshman shortstop Cassie Baca and sophomore first baseman Ashley Powers also hit safely on two occasions.  After a scoreless first inning, Emory scored five times in the second.  Forte singled in Powers with the game's first score, before a bases-loaded clearing double by Pollard pushed Emory to a 4-0 advantage.  Pollard would later score when sophomore Janelle Turnquest singled.  Emory put the game out of reach with a seven-run explosion in the third, highlighted by freshman Lana Herrmann delivering a three-run homer, her sixth round tripper of the season, and senior catcher Melody Carter socking a two-run double.  Junior Brittany File and freshman Toko Miller combined for a one hitter with File earning the win in the circle, her 22nd in 23 decisions, tossing three hitless frames while Miller went the last two innings.

In the opener, Emory was held to a season-low tying three hits but managed to come away with the win. The Eagles got on the board in the top of the first when a ground out by Baca scored Jenna Wilson after she started the game by drawing a walk.  The score remained that way until the bottom of the six when BC pushed across two runs, the last one coming on a single by Mariah Wharton that plated Brianna Cox.  Undaunted, the Eagles scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh with freshman Emmeryn Wheelan getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that allowed Pollard to cross the plate with game-winning run.  Freshman Madeline Maday got the win in relief, going two thirds of an inning in relief of starter Audrey Weller, who tossed the first 5 1/3 frames, allowing two runs and six hits while striking out two.  File earned the save after hurling the seventh inning that saw her escape a two-on, one-out situation by striking out the last two batters.

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Mar. 26) when it plays a doubleheader at Roanoke College with action beginning at 1:00 pm.
