Box Score 2 Junior pitcher Brittany File came through with a pair of solid outings on Wednesday in leading the No. 2-ranked Emory softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Lynchburg College. The Eagles notched a five-inning, 8-0 victory in the opener before battling to a 5-1 triumph in eight innings in the finale. Emory has won its last 18 games and stands 27-1 on the year. Lynchburg closes out the day with a record of 7-9.
Freshman Cassie Baca delivered a bases-load single in the eighth inning that snapped a 1-1 tie and that started a four-run frame for the Eagles. After a pop out, sophomore Janelle Turnquest was credited with a fielder's choice that scored Taylor Forte, with senior Alyssa Pollard also scoring as a result of a Lynchburg error. A sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Amy Wray pushed Baca home with the final run of the contest. Turnquest accounted for Emory's first run when her two-out single to left field in the fourth scored Pollard. Lynchburg battled back to deadlock the game in its half of the sixth. Pollard collected three of Emory's seven hits, her eighth multi-hit outing of the season, and boosted her hitting streak to seven contests. On the day, she went a combined 5-for-7 with four runs scored and four RBIs. File recorded her eighth complete game in 19 starts and raised her record to 21-1 after allowing the Hornets just three hits and striking out six.
In the opener, Pollard went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and four RBIs to lead the Emory attack. After the Eagles scored an unearned run in the top of the first, they tacked up three runs the following inning with a two-out double by Pollard, which plated Ashley Powers and Taylor Forte, the key blow. In its half of the fourth, Emory put the game out of reach crossing the plate four times with a two-RBI single by Pollard jump starting the rally. File held LC hitless over the five innings, striking out eight while issuing three walks.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Mar. 25) when it plays a doubleheader vs. Bridgewater College at Lynchburg, with action beginning at 11:00 am.
