Box Score The No. 8-ranked Emory softball team captured a share of the University Athletic Association title on Sunday after defeating the University of Rochester. The Eagles raised their overall record to 18-2 and closed out play at the league championship with an 8-2 slate after defeating the Yellowjackets, 10-2, in five innings. Emory shares the conference title with Washington University.
The Eagles' Alyssa Pollard and Hannah Sendel each collected a pair of hits while junior Micah Scharff socked a three-run homer that highlighted an eight-run fifth inning that snapped a 2-2 deadlock. Pollard's offensive totals enabled her to raise her hitting streak to 19 games.
Emory jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Sendel delivering a run-producing single that scored Pollard, and sophomore Tara Fallahee registering a sacrifice fly that allowed Scharff to score.
After the Yellowjackets tied the score with single runs in the second and fourth, Emory put the game on ice with an eight-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth. Sendel accounted for the first tally with a run-producing double while sophomore Amy Wray's two-bagger pushed home Fallahee and Raygan Greer. After the next two Eagles were retired, they were the beneficiaries of a Rochester fielding error that allowed two more runners to cross the plate. Pollard was then hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Scharff's three-run blast that closed the game out.
It is the sixth straight season that Emory has won the UAA title. The Eagles return to action on March 21 when they host Fontbonne University in a doubleheader.
