Emory Softball Keeps Up Winning Ways At UAA Championships

The Emory softball team raised its winning streak to six games after capturing a pair of Saturday contests at the University Athletic Association Championships.  The No. 8-ranked Eagles opened with a 9-5 triumph over No. 23 Washington University before registering an eight-inning, 5-4 decision over Brandeis.  Emory is now 17-2 overall, 7-2 in conference play.

Emory 5, Brandeis 4 (8 inn.) – Freshman Ashley Powers' third RBI of the game, a double to right field scores sophomore Amy Wray with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth … Wray opened the eighth inning reaching base following a BU fielding error … Powers closed out the game with a 2-for-3 showing in the batter's box that included a two-run homer, her fourth of the season, that highlighted a three-run fourth inning that gave the Eagles a 4-0 edge … Emory scored first when junior Hannah Sendel blasts a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the first … Junior Alyssa Pollard singles twice to raise her hitting streak to 18 games … Pitcher Sydney Carpenter records the win, her 10th in as many decisions, after hurling 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

Emory 9, Washington University 5 – Four Eagles collect two or more hits as they rap out 12 safeties in the win … Sophomore Tara Fallahee goes 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs while Amy Wray hits safely twice in three trips to the plate and knocks in a pair a runs … Alyssa Pollard and senior Micah Scharff each score two runs … Emory holds a 2-0 lead before adding a pair in the top of the fifth with Wray coming through with a run-producing single and Ashley Powers contributing a sacrifice fly … After the Bears score their first run in the bottom of the fifth, Emory answers with a run in the top of the sixth after Pollard delivers a one-out single and eventually scores on a Fallahee single … Emory adds some insurance in the seventh by pushing four runs across the plate with Scharff recording a sacrifice fly and Wray a RBI single … Junior Sydney Carpenter boosts her record to 9-0 in the circle, tossing 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs, seven hits while fanning three.

Emory will enter the final day of the Championships on Sunday tied with Washington University for the top spot in with a 7-2 slate.  Emory closes the Championships with a 10:00 am game vs.  Rochester while the Bears tangle with Brandeis.
