Second-Ranked Baseball Holds on for 12-10 Win over Brandeis

Box Score

Emory University junior David Coble hit his second home run in as many days as a part of a 10-run fifth inning, as the second-ranked Eagles went on to defeat Brandeis University 12-10 on Wednesday in Sanford, Florida to remain undefeated at the 2015 University Athletic Association Championships.

Coble, who hit his first home run as an Eagle less than 24 hours prior, capped off the Eagles' 10-run outburst in the fifth inning with a three-run shot over the leftfield wall.  The outfielder is now batting .281 this season with nine runs batted in, and five extra-base hits.

The 10-run frame broke open the contest for Emory, after the inning began with the score tied at two runs apiece.  The first 11 Emory batters reached in the inning, as the team collected eight hits, including two-RBI pinch hit singles for both Ben Vizvary and Brian Hernandez.  The Eagles ended the fifth with a 12-2 advantage.

Every run proved to be important, as Brandeis would work its way back into the game with a run in the sixth, five in the seventh, and a single run in each of the eighth and ninth innings, closing the gap to 12-10.  The Judges would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but senior Michael Byman would enter the game and get Ryan Healy to fly out for the final out of the contest, earning his first career save.

Freshman Matt Randolph picked up the first win of his collegiate career in the game, improving to 1-0 on the year after allowing just one run on four hits over a two-inning relief appearance for starting pitcher Luke Emmett.

Philip Maldari, Wes Peacock and Jordan Selbach each had two hits in the game, while Wilson Morgan drove in a pair of runs.

Starter Liam Coughlin took the loss for the Judges, falling to 0-2 on the season.

Halfway through the UAA Championships, Emory assured itself at least a one-game lead on the field with a 4-0 conference record, improving to 10-3 overall on the season.  Brandeis dropped to 0-4 in UAA games, and to 2-8 for the campaign.

Emory will be back in action on Thursday, March 12th at 11:00 am against the University of Rochester.
