Emory Softball Splits On Opening Day Of UAA Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Emory softball team posted a split of a pair of games on the opening day of the University Athletic Association Tournament.  The Eagles started out with a 14-2, five-inning triumph over New York University before seeing an 11-game win streak come to an end when it fell to Case Western Reserve by a 5-3 count.  The No. 16-ranked Eagles are 11-1 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

Case Western Reserve 5, Emory 3 – CWRU pitcher Annie Wennerberg tosses a complete game, holding Emory to a season-low tying five hits and retiring the final 10 batters she faced  … With two out and one on, the Spartans tally four runs in the top of  the first … The Eagles cut the deficit in half with single runs in the first and second innings, the second coming as  a result of a double by junior Micah Scharff, her second hit of the contest, that scores Taylor Forte … After Case crosses the plate once in its half of the fifth, Emory answers in the bottom of the frame when a two-out single by junior Alyssa Pollard scores Amy Wray and extends her hitting streak to 11 games … Sophomore pitcher Brittany File takes the loss, her first in seven decisions this season.

Emory 14, New York University 2 (5 inn.)  – Emory pounds out 13 hits, including four home runs, in the UAA Tournament opener … Both of junior Hannah Sendel's hits are homers and she finishes with three RBIs … Sophomore Tara Fallahee and junior Melody Carter also come through with round trippers … Sendel gets things rolling with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first and the Eagles never look back … Emory explodes for a 10-run third inning with Sendel leading off with a solo blast … Senior Brianna Berceau comes through with a two-run double while Fallahee launches a grand slam in the frame … Eight different Emory players hit safely in the game  … Junior Sydney Carpenter draws the starting nod in the circle and boosts her record to 5-0 after going the first three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Emory returns to action on Wednesday (Mar. 11) when it faces Washington University at 10:00 am, followed by a 1:00 pm tilt vs. Brandeis.
