Box Score The Emory men's basketball team suffered its second setback of the season Saturday afternoon, dropping a road decision at Maryville College. The Eagles saw their record dip to 4-2 after the Scots posted a 91-67 victory that upped their record to 3-1.
Junior Jonathan Terry led the Emory scoring attack with 14 points, all coming in the second half, while senior Will Trawick chipped in 13 points. Terry ended the afternoon sinking six-of-10 from the floor, including two triples in four tries, en route to his third double-figure scoring performance of the campaign. Terry also topped all players with eight rebounds.
Maryville used a hot-shooting second half in securing the win, hitting 55.9 percent (19 of 34) from the field, including 58.3 percent (7 of 12) from three-point range, compared to Emory's mark of 39.4 percent (13 of 33). Maryville was led in scoring by Spencer Shoffner who totaled 24 points, 21 in the second half, concluding the afternoon converting eight-of-16 from floor, three-of-seven from beyond the arc, and five of his six charity tosses. Emanuelle Garcia chipped in 19 points, 16 over the final 20 minutes of action, 15 of which were the result of five three pointers.
Emory trailed by a 48-44 count with 15:06 left in the game after a three pointer by Terry, but seven points by Garcia and four by Shoffner fueled an 11-2 MC run that stretched its lead to 13 points, 59-48, with 13:34 on the clock. A pair of free throws by senior Davis Rao drew Emory to within 10 points with 7:40 remaining, but the Scots took command with a 16-0 blitz, with Shoffner scoring the first five points, running their advantage to 84-58 with 4:25 on the clock.
For the game, Maryville was successful on 47.7 percent (31 of 65) of its floor opportunities, 50 percent (13 of 26) from three-point range, while Emory finished at 35.4 percent (23 of 65). The Scots held a slim 45-43 edge on the glass.
Both teams struggled with an offensive flow during the opening half of play. Emory connected on just 31.3 percent (10 of 32) of its field goal opportunities, including a 15.4 percent effort (2 of 13) from three-point range, while the host Scots were successful on 38.7 percent (12 of 31) from the field, 42.9 percent (6 of 14 ) from beyond the arc. Emory was down by a 17-10 margin midway through the opening stanza before an 8-1 spurt, with five points coming from sophomore Adam Gigax and a triple by Will Trawick, to knot the score at 18-18. The Scots countered with an 8-2 run to claim a 26-20 lead before Trawick accounted for four points during a 6-0 Eagle blitz that tied that score with 4:11 remaining. A three-pointer by MC's Emmanuelle Garcia snapped a 29-29 tie while another triple by Joshua Brooks helped Maryville to a 35-32 lead at the break. Trawick led the Emory scoring attack with nine points while Gigax contributed five points.
Emory returns to action on Sunday when it stays on the Maryville College to tangle with LaGrange College in a 2:00 pm.
