Box Score Junior Jonathan Terry scored a game-high 17 points to lead four double-figure scorers in sparking the Emory men's basketball team to a Sunday evening home win over Birmingham Southern. The No. 18-ranked Eagles raised their record to 2-0 following an 88-54 decision over the Panthers who were making their season debut.
Terry, who also tied sophomore Adam Gigax for team honors with eight boards, closed out the night hitting six-of-eight from the field, including a career-best five three-point field goals. Terry totaled 12 second-half points on the strength of four-of-five marksmanship from beyond the arc. Gigax was next up on the team's score sheet, registering a personal-best 14 points, while senior Davis Rao and junior Austin DaGue each chipped in a dozen points.
For the game, Emory connected on 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the floor compared to BSC's mark of 28.6 percent (18-of-63). The Eagles were successful on 56.7 percent (17-of-30) of its field goal opportunities over the final 20 minutes of play and drained 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from distance in outpointing the Panthers by a 46-29 count. Both teams ended the evening with 42 rebounds, but the Panthers turned the ball over on 17 occasions (12 for Emory) that resulted in the Eagles finishing with a 29-8 advantage in the points-off-turnover category.
Coming out the break with a 17-point bulge, the Panthers scored the first two buckets of the second stanza that drew them to within a 42-29 score. However, Emory put an end to any BSC comeback hopes with a devastating 19-4 barrage over a 6:36 stretch that stretched its lead to a commanding 61-33 with 12:08 remaining in the contest. Five different players scored in the decisive run, with Terry raining down three triples en route to producing nine points. The Panthers would get as close as 19 points with a shade over 10 minutes remaining, but Emory kept the pressure on, leading by as many as 36 points in the waning moments of the game.
Emory built a 42-25 advantage at the break, hitting 45.5 percent (15-of-33) of its field goal attempts compared the Panthers' 26.5 percent (9-of-34). Gigax totaled 12 points during the opening 20 minutes, knocking down five-of-eight from the floor, including pair of triples. Rao converted all four of his field goal opportunities, including a pair of treys, en route to registering 10 first-half points. The Panthers did outboard Emory by a 25-22 margin, but was stymied by nine turnovers that the Eagles parlayed into 18 points. Emory held a nine-point cushion with 12:29 left in the stanza after a bucket by Jonathan Terry, but eight unanswered BSC points sliced the Eagles' edge to 17-16 with 11:04 on the clock. Rao then personally accounted for an 8-0 Emory blitz that extended its lead to nine points. Holding a 25-19 edge, Emory held the Panthers scoreless for a 5:41 stretch, while going on a 12-0 spree, with Gigax scoring eight consecutive points in a 45-second stretch, including back-to-back triples,that extended its margin to 18 points with 2:47 remaining. After the Panthers cut their deficit to 14 points, junior Jim Gordon sank a half-court shot at the buzzer to close out the half's scoring.
Emory closes out a season-opening three-game homestand on Tuesday (Nov. 17) when it welcomes Belhaven University to the Woodruff PE Center.
