Box Score The Emory men's basketball team saw a seven-game win streak come to an end Friday evening as it fell on the road to Washington University. The No. 5 Eagles saw their overall record slip to 11-2 (1-1 UAA) following an 80-67 decision to the No. 6 Bears, who upped their overall mark to 12-1 (1-1 UAA).
Emory shot a season-low 33.3 percent (26-of-78) from the floor compared to Wash U's effort of 46.7 percent (28-of-60). The Eagles were successful on just 25 percent (8-of-32) beyond the arc while the Bears drained 53.3 percent (8-of-15) of their opportunities. Wash U enjoyed a hefty 56-37 bulge in rebounding, just the second time this year an Emory opponent finished with the advantage in that category.
Junior Will Trawick led the Emory scoring attack scoring all 15 of his points over the final 20 minutes of action. Trawick converted six-of-12 from the floor, three-of-seven from three-point range, in notching his ninth double-digit performance of the season. Seniors Alex Foster and Josh Schattie rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 14 and 13 points, respectively, with Schattie leading the club with seven rebounds and four steals.
After a trey by junior Davis Rao in the opening moments of the second half cut a 16-point Bears' lead to 13, the hosts went on a 10-2 run, capped by back-to-back buckets from senior Matt Palucki, that extended its margin to 48-27. Emory attempted to chip away at the gap, but still trailed by a 61-41 count with 11:36 left in the contest. The Eagles kept at it and saw its efforts result in a 15-7 spurt, keyed by Trawick's eight and Schattie's four points, that enabled them to creep to within a dozen points with 8:11 on the clock. Emory kept coming and when Trawick knocked down a trey, it trailed by a 70-59 count. However, that would be as close as the Eagles would get as a pair of baskets by Palucki helped Wash U score nine of the game's next 13 points, pushing its lead back to 16 points with 1:48 on the clock. Palucki finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds while senior guard David Fatoki paced all players with 25 points, sinking nine field goals in 13 opportunites, five-of-six from three-point range.
Emory trailed by a 38-22 margin at halftime, hitting only 23.1 percent (9-of-39) of its field goal attempts, while Wash U converted 36.1 percent (13-of-36). The Bears shot 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from beyond the arc while the Eagles struggled at 13.3 percent (2-of-15). Wash dominated the boards during the opening 20 minutes of play, pulling down 38 caroms to Emory's 19. After a bucket by Josh Schattie gave Emory an early 7-5 lead, the Bears went on an 11-0 run that gave them a 16-7 advantage. Emory kept within striking distance and trailed by seven points at 27-20 following a pair of free throws by sophomore Jonathan Terry. However, Emory was held scoreless over a 5:24 stretch, misfiring on nine field goal attempts, as the Bears scored 11 unanswered points in staking themselves to a 38-20 lead. A basket by senior Michael Florin with three seconds left closed out the scoring for the half.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday (Jan. 18) when they play at No. 23 Chicago (10-3, 2-0 UAA).
