Emory Men's Tennis Falls To Amherst In NCAA Quarterfinals

The No. 6-ranked Emory men's tennis team saw its season come to an end Monday afternoon as it dropped a match to Amherst College in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA D-III Championships in Claremont, California.  The No. 4-ranked Jeffs advanced to Tuesday's semifinals and boosted their overall record to 34-3 following a 5-1 decision over the Eagles who closed out their campaign with a 19-7 won-lost slate.

Amherst held a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match, capturing the Nos. 2 & 3 matches before the Eagles registered what proved to be their lone point of the contest when juniors Alex Ruderman and Ian Wagner clawed to an 9-8 triumph (9-7) at No. 1 against Joey Fritz and Justin Reindel, raising their record to 11-8 on the year.

Amherst extended its lead to 3-1 when Michael Solimano topped the Eagles' Rafe Mosetick, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.  After inching closer to the victory after Chris Dale defeated junior Eric Halpern at No. 2 singles, Amherst sealed the outcome at No. 6 with Reindel bettering Emory sophomore Will Adams, 6-3, 6-3. The matches at first, fourth and fifth singles were in progress when the outcome was decided.

Amherst will meet No. 8 Trinity University (TX) in the semifinals. Trinity advanced to Tuesday's action after upending 2-ranked Washington University, 5-1.

While the team portion of the Championships has concluded for Emory, the Eagles will send Alex Ruderman and Eric Halpern into the Singles Championships, with that action beginning on Thursday (May 22).  The draw for the singles competition will be made on Wednesday.
