Light Ties Emory Season Home Run Record In Doubleheader Sweep Of Birmingham Southern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Senior Megan Light tied the Emory season record for home runs and the Eagles received a pair of strong pitching performances on Thursday in posting a doubleheader sweep at Birmingham Southern College.  Emory captured both contests by identical 2-1 scores, raising its record to 31-6, the program's fourth straight year of 30 or more victories, while Birmingham Southern slipped to 13-13.

The second contest developed into a pitching duel between the Panthers' Bethany Fronk and the Eagles' tandem of freshman Brittany File and senior Amanda Kardys.  After a scoreless first three innings, Emory accounted for all of its scoring in the top of the fourth when Light socked a two-run homer, scoring senior Claire Bailey who led off the frame with a walk.  It was Light's 12th round tripper of the campaign, tying the program's seasonal record that she set in 2013.  The Panthers cut Emory's lead in half in the bottom of the fifth when Maddie Ridgway came through with a two-out single that scored Ashley Leonard.   File went the first five innings and earned the win, her eighth in 12 decisions, allowing three hits and striking out five.  Kardys recorded her first save of the season after hurling the final two innings and allowing one hit.

In the opening contest, a two-out single by Bailey in the top of the sixth inning scored senior Lauren Gorodetsky, snapping a 1-1 deadlock and providing the Eagles their winning margin.  Light collected three of Emory's 10 hits and accounted for the team's first run of the game with her single scoring senior Ally Kersthold.  It was Light's team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the year.  Kardys was solid in the circle, tossing all seven innings and raising her season record to 21-1 after allowing five hits and striking out one batter.

Emory returns to action on Tuesday, April 8, when it hosts a doubleheader against Covenant College starting at 2:00 pm.
