Box Score Junior catcher Micah Scharff keyed a big Emory offensive effort Saturday afternoon as the Eagles posted a victory over Roanoke College. The Eagles raised their overall record to 29-6 following a 15-1 pounding of the Maroons who fell to 6-11. The teams were supposed to play a second game, however that contest was washed out due to inclement weather.
Scharff socked a pair of home runs and totaled eight RBIs in leading the Eagles' attack that saw them crack double figures in runs scored for the 11th time this year. After helping Emory to a three-run first inning with a sacrifice fly, Scharff later blasted a three-run homer in an eight-run second frame and later came through with a grand slam, her fourth round tripper of the year, in the top of the fifth that closed out the contest's scoring. Her RBI total tied the third-highest game effort in school history. Senior first baseman Megan Light continued her torrid hitting, collecting two hits, including her 11th homer of the year, a three-run shot that accounted for all of her RBIs on the day. Emory has hit 34 homers this year, the second-highest seasonal showing in program annals, just two shy of tying the No. 1 mark of 36 round trippers turned in by the 2011 squad. Senior Claire Bailey also hit safely twice and came through with a pair of RBI. Another offensive highlight took place when freshman third baseman Tara Fallahee singled in the fifth inning, extending her hitting streak to 12 consecutive contests.
Senior pitcher Amanda Kardys was the beneficiary of the Emory explosion, tossing all five innings and allowing five hits while striking out seven. The victory was her 20th of the year in 21 decisions.
Emory closes out its road trip through Virginia on Sunday with a doubleheader at Ferrum College (15-9) starting at 11:00 am.
