Box Score 2 The No. 16 Emory softball team started a six-game road trip Thursday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Lynchburg College. The Eagles captured the opener, 9-1, in six innings before the host Hornets regrouped to come away with a 13-8 decision in the nightcap. Emory now stands 28-6 on the year while Lynchburg owns a 14-6 won-lost mark.
Senior Megan Light sparked a 10-hit Emory attack in the first contest, hitting safely three times in four plate appearances while driving in three runs. Sophomore third baseman Hannah Sendel went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while freshman designated player Tara Fallahee also delivered a pair of RBIs. Emory erased a 1-0 deficit with a five-run outburst in the top of the third that was ignited by a three-run homer by Light, her ninth round tripper of the campaign. After Light's blast, Sendel singled and scored when Fallahee socked her fifth homer of the season. After scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth frames, Emory scored what proved to be the final runs of the game in its half of the sixth when Sendel homered to center field. Senior pitcher Amanda Kardys retired the Hornets in the sixth and racked up her 19th win of the year against just one setback, tossing all seven innings and surrendering seven hits while striking out one.
Light and junior catcher Micah Scharff both picked up a pair of hits in the finale, with Scharff driving in three runs. The Eagles got out of the blocks quickly, scoring four runs in their half of the first after the first two batters were retired. Light hit a homered to right center to get things started, with Emory keeping the inning alive with a walk to Sendel followed by a two-bagger by Fallahee. Scharff then homered to give the Eagles the four-run bulge. However, the Hornets responded with three runs in the first with junior Amber Ingram's two-run home run the key blow. A wild pitch in the top of the fourth pushed across an Emory run, giving it a 7-4 lead. Lynchburg battled back to knot the score in the bottom of the inning capitalizing on a pair of two-out doubles that scored its three runs. After holding Emory scoreless in the top of the fifth, Lynchburg blew the game wide open with a six-run frame, staking itself to a 13-7 lead. Sendel homered in the sixth but that would be the end of the scoring for the Eagles.
Emory returns to action on Friday with a twinbill at Ferrum College with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm.
