Box Score 2 Emory softball coach Penny Siqueiros recorded her 500th career victory Friday afternoon as the Eagles swept a doubleheader against Messiah College. Emory topped the Falcons in the opener, 8-0 in five innings, before claiming a 1-0 decision in the finale. The two victories boost the No.12-ranked Eagles' overall record to 14-0.
Siqueiros entered the day with 499 wins and notched her 500th in the opener, thanks to an 11-hit attack and a solid effort in the circle from senior Amanda Kardys, who upped her season record to 9-0 after tossing all five innings and allowing just three hits while striking out one. Sophomore right fielder Alyssa Pollard collected two hits in three trips to the plate and drove in three runs to pace the offensive attack while sophomore catcher Melody Carter and junior Moira Sullivan each hit safely twice and finished with one RBI. Senior first baseman Megan Light enjoyed a 3-for-3 plate performance. Emory pushed home two runs in the bottom of the second with Sullivan's triple to right field scoring Carter and a single by senior center fielder Lauren Gorodetsky allowing Sullivan to cross the plate. Pollard delivered a two-out, two-run single in the third that upped Emory's advantage to 4-0, and later singled in a run as part of four-run fifth that sealed the outcome.
The nightcap featured a pitching duel between Emory freshman Brittany File and Messiah's Claressa Mees. The Eagles touched up Mees with a first-inning run that came as a result of a bases-loaded walk to Sullivan that scored senior Claire Bailey with the game's lone run. File went the distance is raising her record to 4-0, allowing four hits and fanning nine. She worked herself out of a couple of jams, including one in the fifth when the Falcons loaded the bases and in the seventh when they had the tying run on second with one out. Mees took the hard-luck loss, despite surrendering just two hits.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday (Mar. 2) when they host DePauw University in a doubleheader starting at 10:00 am.
