Box Score 2 The Emory University softball team swept its third consecutive weekend of play after battling to a pair of Sunday wins on the final day of action at the 3N2 Classic. The Eagles opened with a 7-4 decision over Case Western in the first contest of the day before posting an 8-0 triumph in six innings over Centre College. Emory is now 12-0 on the season.
Sophomore Melody Carter and junior Moira Sullivan each hit safely twice and drove in three runs in the Case game to lead the Emory offensive attack. Carter doubled in a pair of runs to highlight a three-run first inning while Sullivan drove home a pair, including the eventual game winner, in the bottom of the third that pushed Emory to a 5-3 lead. Both Carter and Sullivan added RBIs in a two-run fifth frame, with Carter's sacrifice fly scoring pinch runner Cortney Sugihara and Sullivan singling in Tara Fallahee. Freshman pitcher Brittany Files turned in a big performance in relief, tossing six innings and allowing just one run while striking out seven in raising her record to 3-0.
Emory pounded out 11 hits in the Centre contest with senior left fielder Ally Kersthold registering a 3-of-3 effort at the plate and scoring four runs. Senior first baseman Megan Light and sophomore Hannah Sendel each collected a pair of RBIs while Sullivan recorded two more hits and another RBI. The Eagles got all the scoring they would need in their half of the first when Light singled home Kersthold, who led off the frame with a walk before stealing second. Later on in the inning a Sendel sacrifice fly pushed sophomore Alyssa Pollard across the plate. Holding a 5-0 lead, the Eagles closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three times with Sullivan delivering a single that scored Light with the final run. Senior Amanda Kardys drew the start in the circle and hurled all six innings in raising her record to 8-0 on the year, allowing just six hits and fanning six.
The Eagles return to action on Friday (Feb. 28) when they host Messiah College in a doubleheader starting at 12:30 pm.
