Box Score 2 The No. 3-ranked Emory volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of action at the University Athletic Association Round Robin II. The Eagles opened with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-11, 25-20) over New York University before seeing a 13-match win streak snapped when No. 7 Washington University emerged with a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-13) triumph. Emory is 25-3 on the season, 4-1 in conference action. Hosting the UAA Round Robin II is the University of Chicago.
For the first time this year Emory was outhit, concluding the Wash U contest with a .190 attack percentage (54-21—174) compared to the Bears' mark of .234 (65-26—167). Sophomore Jessica Holler and senior Cat McGrath accounted for 25 of the squad's 54 terminations with Holler pounding out 14 kills and McGrath totaling a season high of 11. Both Holler and McGrath were extremely efficient in their swing attempts with Holler registering a .429 performance (14-2—28) while McGrath checked in with an effort of .417 (11-1—24). Holler was a formidable presence at the net with nine (2-7) total blocks in helping the Eagles to a 12-7 advantage in the category. In a topsy-turvy fifth set, Emory held a 4-2 lead before seeing WU rattle off four straight points to claim a 6-4 edge. The Eagles countered with a 4-0 run to go up by a pair of points, only to see the Bears knot the score at 8-8. A McGrath kill followed by a service ace from senior Leah Jacobs pushed Emory to a 10-8 advantage, but the Bears picked up four consecutive points, three coming on Emory attacking errors, to claim a 12-10 lead. WU held a 14-12 lead after the teams split the next four points, but Emory remained alive after a service error by WU. However, the Bears closed out the match on the ensuing point on a kill by Caroline DuPont, her 13th of the contest. Junior setter Sydney Miles dished out 44 assists and contributed 10 digs and three blocks assists in the match while sophomore Sheridan Rice and senior Kate Bowman registered 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
Emory finished the NYU affair hitting at a .317 clip (54-15—123) while the Violets turned in a .131 mark (25-11—107). Jacobs topped all players with 16 kills, her 19th match of double figures this season, and finished with a .519 attack percentage (16-1—29). Sophomore Sarah Maher added 10 successful attack attempts to the cause with McGrath chipping in nine kills.
Emory closes out the Round Robin II on Sunday with matches on tap against Brandeis (11:00 am EDT) and Chicago (3:00 pm EDT).
