Box Score 2 Emory pitchers Sydney Carpenter and Lena Brottman combined for a two-hitter and the No. 3-ranked Eagles rapped out eight extra-base hits in a 10-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against LaGrange College on Saturday. The win in the nightcap salvaged a split of twinbill which saw the Panthers rally for a 4-2 win in the opener. Emory now stands 39-3 on the season.
Senior Meaghan Schultz highlighted the offensive barrage in the finale with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with three RBIs. Schultz's double knocked in Lauren Gorodetsky and Megan Light as part of a four-run fourth inning that saw the Eagles extend their lead to 5-0. Schultz later socked her third home run of the season, a solo blast in the top of the seventh, which closed out the team's scoring. Junior Ally Kersthold and sophomore Micah Scharff each collected a pair of hits and two RBIs while Light also reached base safely twice. Both of Scharff's hits were doubles with her two-bagger in the sixth accounting for her RBIs. Carpenter saw her record move to 7-0 on the year, allowing one hit and both runs while Brottman notched a the save, throwing 3 1/3 innings of shutout ball, surrendering just one hit while striking out four.
In the opener, LaGrange hurler Kayla Folds held Emory to three hits while the Panthers pushed across three runs in their half of the sixth to come up with the victory. Emory scored both of its runs and accounted for all of its hits in the top of the first with Scharff and freshman Hannah Sendel delivering RBI singles. LaGrange crossed the plate once in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit in half before taking the lead in the sixth. Laura Webber's two-run double was the big blow in the frame and helped Folds, who retired the last 14 Emory batters she faced, to her 13th win in 20 decisions.
Emory will wait until May 6 when it will hear as to where and who it will be playing in the NCAA D-III Tournament. The announcement can be viewed on ncaa.com starting at 10:00 am (EDT).
