Emory Pitching Fuels Doubleheader Sweep Of St. John Fisher

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The No. 13 Emory softball team received a pair of sterling pitching performances Tuesday afternoon in recording a doubleheader sweep of St. John Fisher.  Emory raised its overall record to 19-0 with 1-0 and 2-0 decisions over the Cardinals who were opening their season.

Junior Lena Brottman, making just her second start in the circle this spring, was sharp in the opener, tossing the first five innings and allowing just one hit, while striking out three, en route to picking up the victory.  Junior Amanda Kardys came on in relief over the last two innings and held the Cardinals hitless.   Emory scored the lone run in the game in the bottom of the third when a two-out double by junior Megan Light scored junior Lauren Gorodetsky from second.   Light accounted for two of the team's three hits.

Another pitching duel ensued in the second contest with Kardys racking up her seventh shutout of the season, going the distance and fanning a pair in boosting her won-lost mark to 13-0.  With the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth, a two-out single by Pollard scored Natalie McLaughlin, who had doubled with one out and then moved to third following an Emory groundout.   The Eagles tacked on another marker the following frame to close out the scoring for the day.

After playing all 19 games at home thus far, Emory returns to action on Friday (Mar. 8) when it travels to Columbus, Ga., to compete in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.  The Eagles will play No. 10 Pacific Lutheran at 10:00 am before closing out the day with a 5:00 pm contest vs. Hiram.  On Saturday, the Eagles battle Kean at 12:30 pm, before going into pool play.
