Emory Softball Edges Rochester -- Claims Outright UAA Title

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team captured the outright University Athletic Association championship Saturday afternoon following its win over the University of Rochester.  The Eagles edged the Yellowjackets, 2-1, in eight innings, raising their overall record to 31-1, 7-0 in conference play.

Junior Claire Bailey knocked in the winning run with a single to center field that scored junior Megan Light who opened the eighth with a walk, and then advanced to third following a Rochester error.  Both team totaled five hits in the pitching-dominated contest with Bailey hitting safely twice.   UR scored the first run of the contest when Gena Bradford led off the top of the fourth with a solo homer.  The Eagles knotted the score in their half of the inning when Light led off with a double and then was lifted for pinch runner Courtney Sugihara.  Sugihara advanced to third after a wild pitch and then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior Meaghan Schultz.  Junior pitcher Lena Brottman boosted her record to 7-0 after tossing 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief that saw her allow just one hit.

Emory has won four straight and seven overall UAA titles.

The Eagles close out the UAA Championships with a Saturday afternoon game vs. Case Western.
