Box Score 2 The Emory softball team, ranked No. 2 nationally, continued its impressive play at the University Athletic Association Championships with a pair of Wednesday wins. The Eagles started out with an 11-3, five-inning triumph over No. 25 Washington University before closing out the afternoon with a 7-0 decision over Rochester. Emory now stands 27-1 overall, 3-0 in the league.
Junior Lena Brottman and freshman Sydney Carpenter combined for the shutout against Rochester. Brottman earned the win, her fifth of the season, after holding the Yellowjackets scoreless over the first four innings and striking out three. Freshman Sydney Carpenter picked up the save after going the final three frames and surrendering two hits while fanning six. Junior Lauren Gorodetsky sparked the offensive attack by collecting three of the club's 10 hits and scoring two runs. Holding a 1-0 lead, Emory scored twice in its half of the third with Micah Scharff coming through with a RBI triple and then scoring on a wild pitch. Sophomore Brianna Berceau stroked a run-producing single as part of a three-run sixth inning while freshman Hannah Sendel closed out the game's scoring with a solo homer, her second in as many days, in the seventh.
In the day's opener against the Bears of Wash U, the Eagles came through with two big innings, scoring five times in the bottom of the third before crossing the plate on six occasions in the fourth frame. Emory pounded out 12 hits with juniors Claire Bailey and Ally Kersthold and freshman Alyssa Pollard all hitting safely twice. Emory generated its five-run outburst after two were out. Back-to-back singles by Melody Carter and Scharff, followed by a walk to Megan Light loaded the bases where senior Meaghan Schultz knocked in one run with a single. After a single by Bailey drove in another run, Kersthold's single to right field knocked in a pair of runs, giving the Eagles a 4-0 edge. Pollard then followed with a single that scored Bailey with the final run of the inning. After seeing the Bears draw to within a 5-2 margin, the Eagles blew the game wide open in the fourth with six runs with freshman Hannah Sendel and Kersthold each socking two-run doubles. Junior pitcher Amanda Kardys tossed all five innings in pocketing her 17th victory in 18 decisions, allowing seven hits and striking out four.
Emory returns to action at the Championships on Thursday when it plays Case Western at 10:00 am.
