Box Score Senior Alex Greven and junior Jake Davis combined for 51 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a decisive win over Case Western Reserve University Friday evening at the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles cracked the 100-point barrier for the second time this season and upped their overall record to 16-6, 8-4 in the University Athletic Association, following a 106-87 decision over the Spartans who fell to 11-12 overall, 4-8 in the conference.
Emory unleashed an unrelenting offensive attack, hitting a season-high 57.6 percent (38-of-66) from the floor including a blistering 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from three-point range, the 12th-highest team effort in school history. Emory has drilled home 10 or more treys on six occasions this season with three of those coming over the past four contests. Case finished with a 37-28 advantage in rebounding but turned the ball over on 24 occasions with the Eagles registering 14 steals that helped them to a 35-19 bulge in the points off turnovers department.
Greven tied for game scoring honors with a season-high 26 points, his seventh outing of 20 or more points this year, hitting nine-of-16 from the floor including a career-high six three pointers in nine tries. Davis totaled 25 points, his ninth performance of 20 or more points on the campaign, converting nine-of-15 from the field and four-of-six from beyond the arc. Sophomore Michael Florin rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with a career-high 16 points while doling out seven assists.
Emory and Case were tied, 12-12, with 15:06 left in the first half before the Eagles scored 19 unanswered points over a 5:30 span to bolt to a 31-12 cushion with 9:40 left in the stanza. Florin scored seven points during the blitz while Davis contributed five points. After the Spartans hit back-to-back triples to cut the gap to 13 points, Emory socked CWRU with a 14-0 barrage that saw Greven score seven points and Davis five as it mounted a 45-18 lead with 5:20 left in the stanza. With Greven and Davis scoring 17 and 15 points, respectively, and Emory shooting 58.1 percent from the floor, the Eagles went into the intermission with a hefty 56-38 lead.
Case scored the first five points of the second half but Emory squashed any Spartan comeback hopes with a 20-7 burst that was highlighted by Greven, junior McPherson Moore, Davis and sophomore Alex Foster all draining shots from distance, igniting the team to a 76-50 lead with 15:05 left in the contest.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 17) when it hosts Carnegie Mellon in a noon tip.
