Box Score EMORY VOLLEYBALL HOLDS OFF BERRY – PLAYS FOR ATLANTA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ON SUNDAY
The No. 7-ranked Emory volleyball team received double-figure kills from three players as it defeated Berry College in the second round of the Atlanta Regional Saturday afternoon. The Eagles raised their record to 32-4 following a 3-1 triumph (25-13, 15-25, 25-20, 25-13) over the Vikings who finished off their year at 26-8.
The junior trio of
Cat McGrath,
Kate Bowman and
Leah Jacobs accounted for 36 of the team's 49 kills with McGrath posting 13 terminations en route to a blistering .600 hitting percentage (13-1—20). Bowman totaled a dozen successful attack attempts, her 17
th double-figure outing of the campaign, while Jacobs chalked up 11 kills, her seventh match in the last eight with double figures. Sophomore
Taylor Erwin paced the team with 20 digs, her 13
th match this season where she reached the 20-plateau mark, while setter
Sydney Miles dished out 39 assists.
With McGrath pounding out six kills and Bowman five, Emory hit .424 and held Berry to an effort of .034 in breezing to the first-set win. The Vikings regrouped and turned the tables on the Eagles, limiting them to a .000 hitting mark in knotting up the contest. In the third game, a service ace by McGrath gave Emory a 10-5 advantage but Berry rattled off five straight points to tie things up. A kill by BC's Emily Stromberg gave the visitors a 15-14 lead, but a pair of terminations by freshman
Sarah Maher and one by Bowman highlighted a 6-0 Eagle spurt that put them ahead, 20-15. Berry managed to draw to within two points at 22-20 but Emory closed out the set with three straight points. The Eagles used that momentum in the fourth game, scoring the first four points and never looking book in closing out the contest. For the match, Emory finished with a .269 hitting percentage (49-14—130) compared to Berry's .081 (38-27—135). The Eagles enjoyed edges in both digs (67-59) and blocks (8-5). The win was the 18
th in 19 decisions at home this season for Emory.
Emory will battle Colorado College (35-4) for the Regional title on Sunday starting at 2:00 pm. The winner earns the right to advance to the national championships for quarterfinal-round play (Nov. 21) in Holland, Michigan.
