Eagles Remain Undefeated in UAA with 2-0 Win over NYU

The Emory University Men's Soccer team extended its undefeated streak to five games and moved back into first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a 2-0 win over New York University at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Friday night.

With the win, Emory took a hold of first-place in the conference with a 2-0-1 record in UAA matches, and seven points.  With three UAA games in the books for all eight teams, the Eagles are one point ahead of both Carnegie Mellon (which defeated Brandeis earlier in the day) and Rochester (which was defeated by Chicago 2-1 on Friday).

Overall, Emory now stands at 9-3-1 for the season, while NYU dropped to 6-4-3 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.

After the first half hour of the match went by without a goal, the Eagles were able to take the lead in the 34th minute behind a strike from the team's leading scorer, junior co-captain Dylan Price.  The scoring play began in the Eagles' defensive third, where sophomore center back Matt Sherr took possession, and launched a long pass forward to Price.  The forward was able to outrun a defender to catch up to the ball, setting up a one-on-one with the keeper, and sliding it past the NYU keeper for his eighth goal of the season.  Sherr was credited with his second assist of the year on the play.

Emory extended its lead immediately after halftime, as junior Michael Rheaume picked up his fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute of action.  Junior co-captain and defender Noah Rosen took a shot off a Jeffrey Cochran throw-in that ricocheted off the post, and rolled directly to Rheaume who tapped it in for the score.  Rosen earned the assist on the play, his first of the season.

Meanwhile, the Eagles' defense put up another strong effort, recording its second-straight clean sheet.  The Eagles' allowed just two shots in the second half and seven shots total for the game en route to the shutout.  Meanwhile, Emory mustered an 18-shot attack, including seven on goal and 13 in the second half.

Goalkeeper Abe Hannigan earned his second-straight shutout and fifth overall this season, while improving his personal record to 9-3-1 for the campaign.  Hannigan save each of the Violets' three shots on goal, raising his save percentage to .735 while lowering his goals against average to 1.00.

Price finished the contest with a game highs with five shots and three shots on goal, while picking up his third game-winning score of the season.  Price is now tied with former Eagles for 16th in school history with Chad Chambers (2003-06) with 27 career goals, and for third in the program's annals with James Doran (1993-96) with 11 career game-winning goals.

The Eagles will look extended their undefeated streak when they wrap-up their home conference weekend on Sunday, October 20th, when the squad will play host to 12th-ranked Brandeis University at 11:00 AM at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
