Senior Alex Greven and junior McPherson Moore combined for 40 points and the Emory men's basketball team came through with a strong second-half performance in earning a victory at Case Western. The Eagles improved their overall record to 10-4, 2-2 in the University Athletic Association, following an 82-60 decision over the Spartans who slipped to 8-7 in overall play, 1-3 in the league.
Greven tied for game-high scoring honors with 21 points, sinking eight-of-13 from the floor and all four of his free throw opportunities. It was Greven's 13th double-figure scoring effort of the campaign and fifth of 20 or more points. Moore wound up the night with a season-high tying 19 points, 15 coming in the decisive second half, converting seven-of-15 from the floor including three-of-five from three-point range. Junior Jake Davis rounded out Emory's double-figure scorers with 15 points, his 37th straight contest of double digits, on seven-of-15 field goal shooting. Davis also snatched a team-high eight rebounds.
Emory shot a keen 59.3 percent (19-of-32) from the field in the second half of play en route to outpointing the host Spartans by a 47-22 margin. After hitting just two-of-nine from beyond the arc in the first half, the Eagles converted six of their nine tries from distance in the second stanza while Case sank just one of its eight opportunities.
The game was decided over a six-minute stretch in the second half when Emory used a lethal 24-3 run that turned a 39-39 tie into an insurmountable 63-42 lead with 11:30 left in the contest. Moore accounted for 13 points during the blitz, knocking down all three of his treys in the spree. Five different players scored during the run including a pair of buckets by Davis along with a triple by sophomore Michael Florin.
The teams battled to a 35-35 deadlock heading into halftime with Greven scoring 12 points to lead the Emory offense while Case sophomore Dane McLoughlin, the UAA leader in three-point shooting, accounted for 17 points. With McLoughlin sinking all six of his field goal tries, including both of his three-point attempts, Case sank 50 percent (13-of-26) of its field goal tries while the Eagles converted at a 40 percent (14-of-35) clip. Emory led by as many as eight points on two occasions during the opening 20 minutes of play, the final time coming with 3:28 left in the stanza following a layup by Greven off a nice pass from Davis. The Spartans closed out the half on a 10-2 spurt with McLoughlin scoring seven points in that stretch to knot the score heading into the intermission.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 20) when it plays at Carnegie Mellon.
