Emory Men's Basketball Stung By Late Wash U Three Pointer

Box Score

Washington University junior Alan Aboona's three-point field goal with nine seconds propelled the Bears to a come-from-behind win over Emory University Friday evening at the Woodruff PE Center.  No. 12-ranked WU raised its overall record to 11-2, 1-1 in the University Athletic Association, following an 86-84 verdict over Emory who slipped to 8-4 overall, 0-2 in the league.

Alboona's triple capped off a big night that saw him total a game-high 35 points, sinking 12-of-16 from the floor, including 10-of-11 from three-point range.   Alboona's output helped offset a balanced Emory scoring attack that featured five double-digit scorers, led by junior Jake Davis who picked up 20 points on nine-of-18 field goal shooting including two-of-three from beyond the arc.  Seniors Alex Greven and Michael Friedberg each picked up 15 points while junior McPherson Moore (13 pts.) and sophomore Alex Foster (11 pts.) rounded out the double-figure scorers.  Moore also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Emory ended the contest shooting 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field while the Bears registered a mark of 49.3 percent (33-of-67).   Both squads were effective from beyond the arc with WU at 63.2 percent (12-of-19) and Emory at 55.6 percent (10-of-18).   WU recorded a 40-32 advantage in rebounding, 14-8 on the offensive end of the floor that helped it finish with a 13-4 cushion in second-chance points.

Holding a 59-55 lead with 15:20 left in the contest, Emory went on a 7-0 run, started with a three-pointer by Friedberg and then followed by four points from Greven, to bolt to an 11-point cushion, 66-55, with 13:37 left on the clock.  After WU cut the led to seven points, an 8-2 Eagle spurt, capped by a triple from Foster, boosted Emory's advantage to 74-61 with 9:50 remaining.  A bucket by Friedberg with 8:33 on the clock maintained Emory's lead at 13 points, but the Eagles would miss their next six shot attempts from the floor that helped WU post a 16-3 charge, with Aboona scoring six points in that stretch, to knot the game at 80-80 with 2:39 remaining.   Another Aboona triple with 1:51 left gave the Bears their first lead of the game, 83-80, before foul shots by Greven cut WU's lead to one point with 1:19 left.  After getting a defensive stop, Emory reclaimed the lead with 20 ticks on the clock following a basket by Davis.  However, Alboona's last trey of the game enabled WU to escape with the win.

Behind 16 points from Davis and nine from Greven, Emory withstood a 23-point first half by Alboona in taking a 49-47 lead at halftime.   The Eagles connected on 52.8 percent of its field goal attempts (19-of-36) in the opening 20 minutes of play while the Bears converted 50 percent.  Behind a pair of treys by Davis and Foster, Emory drained six-of-10 triple tries while WU knocked down eight-of-12 including a 7-of-7 effort by Alboona.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 13) when its hosts the University of Chicago in a noon tip.
