Box Score Berry College's Trent Hillis shut down the Emory University baseball team through six and two-thirds innings on Tuesday at Chappell Park, as the Eagles fell to the Vikings 7-0 to end a nine-game home stand.
The loss dropped the Eagles to 7-6 on the campaign, while Berry got back to .500 with the victory, improving to 8-8.
It marked the second time this season that the Eagles have been shutout, including a 2-0 loss to Piedmont College on February 18th. Emory was outhit 15-6 in the game by Berry.
Accounting for three of the Eagles' hits was senior Jay Page, who raised his average to .261 with a three-for-four performance. Freshman Brett Lake, sophomore Brandon Hannon and junior Daniel Iturrey accounted for the other three hits in the game for Emory, all singles.
Emory fell behind 1-0 in the first inning after Berry loaded the bases with nobody out and scored on a wild pitch. However, Eagles' starter Paul Schwendel struck out back-to-back hitters and induced a groundout to the shortstop to end the Berry threat in the inning.
The Eagles continued to trail by a run until the fifth, when the Vikings picked up four-straight hits off Schwendel, scoring two on a base hit from Kevin Scott. Berry added three more runs in the top of the sixth off Emory reliever Dylan Finer, and another in the eighth against Michael Byman.
Schwendel took the loss for Emory, falling to 1-2 on the campaign. Hillis earned the victory, raising his record to 3-1.
The Eagles received a strong relief effort from senior Ryan Orlovsky, who pitched a perfect inning and a third, recording one strikeout.
Emory will kick off play at the UAA Tournament on Sunday, March 11th, facing Brandeis University at 11:00 AM at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida.
